Currently, there is a severe shortage of lungs for transplant and recipients of human lungs from unrelated donors require life-long immunosuppression that makes them susceptible to many unusual diseases and cancers.- The bio-engineered lung is custom-made from the bone marrow derived stem cells of the recipient and a bio-scaffold. The custom lung will not require immunosuppression.
